IBM will be partnering with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, offering a $240 million investment to conduct artificial intelligence research in a new MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. The new investment reflects a commitment to development in technology that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned could threaten the existence of humanity if left unregulated.

The 10-year investment will contribute to basic AI research to help unlock the full potential of autonomous technology. The company will work with research students and professors on hardware, software and deep learning algorithms.

The goal of the funding will be to advance AI research and introduce autonomous technology into society, especially in fields like cybersecurity and health care.

“The field of artificial intelligence has experienced incredible growth and progress over the past decade. Yet today’s AI systems, as remarkable as they are, will require new innovations to tackle increasingly difficult real-world problems to improve our work and lives,” John Kelly III, IBM senior vice president, Cognitive Solutions and Research, told MIT News. “The extremely broad and deep technical capabilities and talent at MIT and IBM are unmatched, and will lead the field of AI for at least the next decade.”

The partnership comes in the wake of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s recent warnings about how the race to develop AI technology could prove dangerous for the planet. Citing China and Russia as countries among those at the forefront of development, Musk warned that the race has already begun.

Musk’s tweet was in response to a statement made by Russian president Vladimir Putin. Putin said that whoever controls ground-breaking AI technology will have a firm grip over the world.

“Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind. It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said, according to RT.

As research and development begins at the new MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, only the future holds the truth regarding Musk’s incessant warnings.
