First look at Tesla’s mobile Airstream Design Studio in Santa Barbara, CA

Tesla kicked off its ‘Explores’ tour this past weekend with the company’s first pit stop taking place in Santa Barbara, CA. A sleek and flashy Airstream trailer being towed by an equally sleek and flashy Ludicrous Tesla Model X P90D made its way to Paseo Nuevo, a busy outdoor entertainment and lifestyle facility located at the quaint beachside city 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

Photos posted to imgur show an interior section of the makeshift mobile Design Studio outfitted with Model S and Model X interior trim decor. Visitors were presented with a variety of interior trim options ranging from premium Obeche wood to carbon fiber, along with choice of vehicle color and seat fabric. Working with an onsite Tesla Product Specialist, interested buyers were presented with the option to customize their vehicle and place a reservation on the spot. This follows the same direct-to-consumer sales model that has gotten the Silicon Valley-based automaker into legal trouble in some states where dealer franchises are seen as the only means for manufacturers to sell new vehicles.

The Tesla Explores kickoff was held during the busy National Drive Electric Week, a nationwide celebration to highlight the benefits of driving all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. Tesla fans and potential customers were invited to see the Model X in person and, in the company’s own words, “get the complete Tesla experience”.

The North American tour will continue to Venice, CA, New York, New Jersey, before making its way to a handful of other major metropolitan cities. The new program is presumably another way for Tesla to extend its brand reach to consumers and stimulate Model X sales without having to take on traditional advertising.

If you’d like to see the tour come to a city near you, make a request directly through the company’s Tesla Explores page.
