Ford has announced the imminent arrival of three new hands-free driving features to both BlueCruise and Lincoln ActiveGlide. This fall, Lane Change Assist, Predictive Speed Assist, and In-Lane Repositioning will arrive to the hands-free driving suites via a software update.
Ford said the first vehicle to receive the new BlueCruise hands-free driving updates will be the all-electric Mustang Mach-E. The next-gen BlueCruise 1.2 and ActiveGlide 1.2 features will be geared toward helping Ford and Lincoln cars travel more comfortably while navigating near larger vehicles.
“We are investing in our ADAS team to constantly improve BlueCruise and ActiveGlide for our customers,” Chief EV and Digital Systems Officer Doug Field said. “The latest improvements allow customers to command lane changes using just a turn signal, and make hands-free driving feel more human-like by smoothly slowing down for turns, and giving more room to large vehicles in neighboring lanes. These improvements are just the beginning of a constant journey toward improving safety and giving customers valuable time back.”
Ford’s in-house team of dedicated BlueCruise engineers has worked to deliver the suite with a more human-like driving experience. The team continuously improves maps utilized by the suite and adds new compatible roadways via software updates. Currently, more than 130,000 miles of roadways across the country can be navigated with BlueCruise.

The three new features aim to improve overall hands-free driving experiences for the owners, but the feature additions also contribute to a more realistic feel with human-like movements. Ford describes the new features:
- Lane Change Assist – Can help drivers move through traffic on the freeway with more confidence while using BlueCruise. The system will perform a hands-free lane change when requested by the driver tapping the turn signal, and it can even suggest if a lane change would be beneficial when following slow-moving traffic
- Predictive Speed Assist – Automatically and smoothly adjusts the speed as drivers approach a sharp curve and will help signal the driver ahead of time when a speed change is about to occur so they understand why the vehicle is slowing
- In-Lane Repositioning – Makes the hands-free highway driving experience feel more natural, keeping the vehicle in its lane while subtly shifting the vehicle’s position away from vehicles in adjacent lanes – especially helpful when next to bigger vehicles such as semis.
The continuous improvements have led to an expansion of the BlueCruise program, with more than 75,000 drivers of Ford and Lincoln vehicles enrolled in both BlueCruise or ActiveGlide. In July, Ford had roughly 66,500 owners in the program in late July. To date, drivers have utilized the hands-free systems through over 16 million miles of travel.
