Legendary car presenter and former Top Gear host James May recently reviewed the Tesla Cybertruck. Quite impressively, May admitted that he liked Tesla’s brutalist pickup truck, though he also noted that he wished the company would create a smaller electric vehicle with similar styling as the Cybertruck.
In his review, which was posted on the James May’s Planet Gin YouTube channel, the former Top Gear host acknowledged that the Cybertruck is a large, wide vehicle that is quite cool. He also acknowledged some of the all-electric pickup truck’s innovations, such as its steer-by-wire system, four-wheel steering, and its trademark Tesla features.
More importantly, May mused that the Cybertruck’s aggressively angular design language would probably look pretty good in a vehicle that’s about the size of a Ford Focus. Such a vehicle would invoke images of iconic cars like the Lamborghini Countach, which graced innumerable bedroom walls in the 1980s.
Overall, James May noted that while he is personally not a fan of pickup trucks, he actually likes the Cybertruck. It is a polarizing vehicle—there’s no doubt about that—but it does make everything else on the road look quite boring in comparison. He then shared his personal request to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
“I think the Cybertruck is very ballsy and quite humorous, but I am quite glad it exists. And if I can make a little appeal to Elon Musk, ‘Could you make something about the size of the Model Y or maybe even a little smaller—still like a Tesla with all this Tesla stuff in it—but styled like this?’ I’d go for that,” May said.
Among Top Gear’s three legendary hosts, James May is arguably the one who is most knowledgeable about electric vehicles. He has purchased Teslas in the past, such as a Model S 100D, and more recently, a reengineered Model 3, as per his comments in his Cybertruck review.
