A Tesla Cybertruck in China has seemingly been registered, marking the first time one of the electric vehicles (EVs) has been spotted with a license plate in the country.

On Friday, a Tesla Cybertruck was spotted with a license plate in the Tianjin municipality in China, coming amidst significant speculation as to whether the EV would be able to be registered in the country. In the sighting, shared in a video from X user GearMusk, you can clearly see a Cybertruck passing the driver with a license plate on the back of the truck.

It’s not clear at the time of writing what kind of license plate was put on this Cybertruck, or whether it means that a wider base of the vehicles will soon be able to be registered in China.

Since the idea of the Tesla Cybertruck coming to China and other countries has come up, there has been substantial discussion about passenger safety regulations that could prevent the EV from being able to be registered in the country.

“Getting Cybertruck road legal in China would be very difficult, but we could ship some prototypes over for display,” Musk said in January, as followed by the ensuing Cybertruck tour.

Despite the Cybertruck seemingly being tough to register in Europe and many parts of Asia, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in June that the Cybertruck could be certified for other markets sometime next year, and a few Cybertruck units have seemingly also been registered in Europe in recent weeks.

In January, following statements from Musk about how hard the truck would be to make road legal in China, Tesla launched a Cybertruck tour in the country, which later made it to a number of other countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

The Cybertruck launched last November after years of anticipation, and the EV became the top-selling U.S. vehicle over $100,000 in each of the past two months.
