Tesla FSD seems to handle once-challenging maneuver with confidence

Tesla Full Self-Driving seems to handle this once-challenging maneuver with significant improvement compared to the past, as its most recent versions continue to refine some of the most common, yet difficult driving situations.

Although Full Self-Driving is not fully autonomous and autonomy is not solved, Tesla’s most recent versions have continued to refine behaviors that were once tall tasks. The millions of miles driven each year on the semi-autonomous driving suite help improve its operation, slowly but surely working toward what will eventually be a fully autonomous driving feature — if all goes according to plan.

Roundabouts are one thing that used to present Tesla’s FSD suite with a challenge. From 2021 to 2023, roundabouts were somewhat of a hotly contested topic, with the commonly mentioned “two weeks” by Elon Musk being given as a goal for smoother operation.

This was all the way back with FSD v10:

We are past that timeframe by a long shot, but the recently released FSD v12.5.1.3 seems to show the roundabout maneuverability has gotten to a point where drivers might be more confident, as shown in a recent drive with Whole Mars Blog:

Of course, it is important to note this is a singular occurrence, and perhaps it is not a representation of its performance on roundabouts as a whole. However, it does seem there is considerable improvement from what drivers once said. This also is not to say that roundabouts were not easily handled by past versions.

It is telling that Tesla FSD handled this roundabout with human-like behavior, but that is subjective. There are many variables, including traffic, weather, and other things that change with nearly every drive that people take.

Most importantly, we are seeing more progress with the FSD suite as Tesla continues to work toward Level 5 and ultimately full autonomy, which will drive the release of the Robotaxi, which is set to be unveiled on October 10.
