Tesla Gigafactory 3 battery facility gets roof trusses as Model 3 fleet is spotted onsite

Recent footage of the Tesla Gigafactory 3 complex in Shanghai reveals that the roof trusses of the electric car maker’s battery facility are nearly complete. Images of what appear to be Model 3 trial production units at a parking lot also hint that the massive electric car production facility is ready to start building vehicles en masse.

A video taken by EV enthusiast Chao Zhou of Tesla Gigafactory 3’s Phase 2 area shows that the roof trusses of the upcoming battery facility are pretty much laid out. The recent video complements footage shot by drone operator Jason Yang a few days ago, which provided a birds-eye-view of the expansive work being conducted in the Phase 2 zone.

The completion of the Phase 2 zone’s roof trusses bodes well for Tesla’s upcoming battery facility. When roof trusses were finished in the Phase 1 area, after all, it only took a short time before Tesla’s construction partner started installing the facade of the general assembly facility. Considering the speed of the Phase 2 buildout so far, it would not be surprising if the battery building will have some parts of its facade already installed by the end of the year.

It’s not only the Phase 2 area that is making waves in the Gigafactory 3 site. Apart from the quick progress of the upcoming battery facility, Model 3 production activities in the Phase 1 zone have also started hitting their stride. Initial Model 3 trial production units were spotted around the Gigafactory 3 complex in recent weeks, and in a recent flyover, the most encouraging sign for Tesla’s Shanghai-based Model 3 and Model Y plant was spotted.

At a parking lot at one end of the general assembly building was a group of what appeared to be freshly-produced Model 3 units. No local reports have explained what the vehicles exactly were, though there is a good chance that they are still part of Tesla’s trial production phase. A couple of Model 3 sedans were also sighted close to Gigafactory 3’s test track, suggesting that the general assembly building is already operational. It might not be manufacturing the Model 3 in large numbers yet, but Gigafactory 3’s general assembly building appears ready to start ramping its activities.

Local reports and teasers from Tesla China hint at Model 3 deliveries starting in Q1 2020. That’s only a few months away from today, though considering the pace of progress in the Gigafactory 3 site, such a target date almost seems too conservative. With trial Model 3 production units seemingly coming out of the factory, it will likely be only a matter of time before deliveries to the first Made-in-China Tesla Model 3 reservation holders are conducted.
