Tesla Model 3’s stellar safety ratings could lower owners’ insurance rates

Thanks to the Tesla Model 3’s recently received Top Safety Pick+ award, owners could end up receiving lower insurance rates from providers. This is especially true for electric car owners who will opt for the company’s in-house insurance service.

Tesla Insurance was announced by CEO Elon Musk during the company’s first-quarter earnings call and initially rolled out by the Silicon Valley-based electric car manufacturer on August 28. The company stated that it would help owners save up to 30% of their current insurance premiums. It is currently only available to Tesla owners in the company’s home state of California but will be rolled out nationwide at some point in the future.

The advantage of the manufacturer having its own insurance service is the fact that the company knows its vehicles better than anyone else, meaning that Tesla could “leverage the advanced technology, safety, and serviceability of (its) cars to provide insurance at a lower cost.” And this is really where a big difference lies: Tesla is able to command fair prices for its insurance services because it has access to valuable vehicle data.

This is not the case with mainstream insurance providers. Unfortunately, Teslas have traditionally been subjected to high premiums from providers, with some vehicles such as the Model 3 commanding rates that are comparable to that of high-end luxury cars. A part of this is likely due to misconceptions and a general lack of background on electric cars among providers.

Thus, the Model 3’s high safety ratings across the board could result in a change of perception among providers, which, in turn, could result in charges that are more palatable to owners. Such would be a welcome change of pace, particularly for electric car owners living beyond the reach of Tesla Insurance.

Tesla vehicles have had a great history of high-safety ratings, in particular, the Model 3. In September 2018, The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the vehicle a flawless 5-star safety rating. When the vehicle was subjected to safety tests by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) in July 2019, the Model 3 performed so well that Matthew Avery, head of research at Thatcham Research, which conducts the crash tests, remarked that the all-electric sedan “achieved one of the highest Safety Assist scores we have seen to date.”

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program, or ANCAP, also gave the car a 5-star safety rating and a perfect score on 3 out of 4 of the organization’s individual tests. Most recently, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Model 3 the Top Safety Pick+ award, noting the vehicle’s standard front crash prevention system as “superior.”
