Tesla Model X Self Presenting Doors Improved with Firmware Update (Video)

Anyone that’s seen a Model S knows that its retractable door handles is a masterful piece of engineering, for better or worse. Walk up to the car and the door handles greet you by surfacing themselves from within the door. Walk away and they automatically retract. The flush mount design of the door handles not only has a super cool factor to it, but also allows the vehicle to maintain one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production car available. Low drag means better aerodynamics which means better range.

The Model X is no different in the sense that it has a flush mount handle and is self-presenting, but here’s the big difference. What’s self-presenting isn’t the handles. Rather, the entire front door of the Model X automatically swings open making for truly frictionless entry into the vehicle.

The self-presenting doors were first revealed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the Model X reveal event, but the feature wasn't available to early recipients of the vehicle. Thanks to Tesla's continuous vehicle improvements via over-the-air software updates, and the bevy of door sensors, the Model X front doors can automatically open and close based on the proximity of the key fob holder to the vehicle.

Check out the following video demonstrations of the Model X self-presenting doors in action.
