Tesla leads the pack as electric vehicles (EVs) dominate Norway roads.

According to the latest figures from Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), EVs officially outnumber petrol cars on Norwegian roads. Out of Norway’s 2.8 million registered passenger cars, 754,303 are electric vehicles. There are 753,905 petrol cars in Norway.

“This is historic. A milestone few saw coming ten years ago. The electrification of the passenger car fleet is keeping a high pace, and Norway is making rapid strides in the direction of becoming the first country in the world with a passenger car population dominated by electric cars.” said Director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen of OFV.

Tesla dominated vehicle sales in Norway last month, surpassing Toyota by a significant margin. OFV data reveals that Tesla sold 2,485 units in Norway in August. Tesla has sold 13,440 vehicles in Norway this year so far. In comparison, Toyota sold 805 units in August and 9,761 cars since the beginning of the year.

According to a local Norwegian newspaper, EVs dominate Norway roads now because nearly all new passenger car registrations are electric. Norwegian drivers also started deregistering many cars after the summer.

Besides petrol vehicles, the number of diesel passenger car registrations has also declined. This month, the number of diesel passenger cars on Norwegian roads is under a million.

“The speed at which we are seeing the replacement of the passenger car fleet now may indicate that in 2026 we will also have more electric cars than diesel cars,” commented Thorsen.
