Tesla Vision Model Y earns highest Euro NCAP overall score under new protocol

The Tesla Vision Model Y has crushed its recent rounds of safety tests, earning the highest overall score under the Euro NCAP’s newest and most stringent protocol to date. The results could be seen as a validation of Tesla Vision, as the tests showed that the Model Y is still incredibly safe — perhaps even safer — without radar.

The safety scores of the Tesla Vision Model Y were published by both the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) and the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). As per a press release from the Euro NCAP, Model Y units that were used in the safety tests were produced in Gigafactory Berlin.

Overall, the Model Y received an Adult Occupant Protection rating of 97%, a Child Occupant Production rating of 89%, a Vulnerable Road User Protection rating of 82%, and a near-perfect Safety Assist rating of 98%. The Model Y’s 98% score in the Euro NCAP’s safety assist category is especially impressive as these are related to features that utilize the company’s radar-less Tesla Vision system.

In fact, Model Y’s Safety Assist rating is the highest score among the vehicles that have been tested by the Euro NCAP to date. The Model Y’s stellar Adult Occupant Protection rating is also the highest thus far under the agency’s 2020-2022 rating criteria. Overall, the results of the Model Y’s safety tests prove one thing: vehicles equipped with Tesla Vision are just as safe — if not safer — than other vehicles out on the roads today.

Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen issued a statement praising the Model Y for its stellar safety scores. “Congratulations to Tesla for a truly outstanding, record-breaking Model Y rating. Tesla has shown that nothing but the best is good enough for them, and we hope to see them continue to aspire to that goal in the future,” van Ratingen remarked.

Interestingly enough, ANCAP actually praised Tesla’s Driver Monitoring System (DMS) on the Model Y, which also uses cameras to determine if a driver is paying attention to the road. This is quite different compared to the reactions from agencies in the United States like Consumer Reports, which has consistently compared Tesla’s camera-based DMS unfavorably over the eye-tracking system used by General Motors’ Super Cruise.

Following is the Model Y’s safety reports from the Euro NCAP and ANCAP.
