Recent reports have indicated that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would be announcing his presidential bid for the 2024 elections in a Twitter Spaces discussion with CEO Elon Musk. The session will be moderated by tech entrepreneur David Sacks.
The upcoming announcement resulted in quite a lot of attention, considering that this is the first time that a presidential candidate would be announcing a candidacy through Twitter. Considering DeSantis’ conservative views, however, it was no surprise that a number of users on the social media platform asked Musk if he would be willing to hold similar sessions with liberal candidates as well.
Among them is prolific Twitter user David Weissman, a former supporter of 45th US President Donald Trump. In his comment, Weissman noted that it would be a good idea to also have US President Joe Biden do a Twitter Spaces interview with Musk. This way, the president’s message could reach a larger demographic, not just his existing supporters. Musk responded to the suggestion positively, noting that he would be “happy to do it.”
Musk’s response to the suggestion was received positively by users of the social media platform, with many noting that it was a sign that the CEO, despite his apparent favor with right-wing stances as of late, is still quite serious about his commitment to making Twitter a neutral town square. It would also be quite interesting to see the current US President engage in what could very well be a free-form, spontaneous Twitter Spaces session with Musk and a moderator.
Twitter may still be controversial, but the social media company is showing signs that it is stabilizing. GroupM, a premier media agency, recently noted that Twitter is no longer a “high-risk” entity for advertisers, especially with the entrance of advertising veteran Linda Yaccarino as the company’s new chief executive. Musk has also maintained that Twitter is already on track to becoming more financially stable.
Twitter’s steady — albeit painful — improvement can be seen in the social media platform’s rankings in the 2023 Axios Harris Poll 100 reputation rankings. A look at Twitter’s rankings in the poll shows that the company is at the bottom of the list, at No. 97. These results, however, are still better than Twitter’s rankings from the previous year, when it was listed at No. 98. Musk had not completed his acquisition of Twitter at the time when the 2022 poll was conducted.
