Tesla is recalling over 4,700 Model X in China due to an issue that could affect braking performance. Similar to most Tesla recalls, the issue would be addressed through an over-the-air software update.
The recall affects a total of 4,787 Model X vehicles that were produced between October 13, 2021 and September 28, 2023. As per an announcement on the website of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), affected Model X vehicles may fail to alert drivers when their brake fluid level is low.
As per the SAMR announcement, the issue could lead to decreased braking performance on affected Model X vehicles. In extreme cases, affected vehicles could see an increased crash risk.
To address the issue, Tesla will roll out software version 2023.32.9 or later to affected vehicles, which should correct the issue. This way, the affected Model X vehicles would be able to send out proper alerts when their brake fluid levels are low, as noted in a CNEV Post report.
In the rare case that an affected Model X is unable to receive version 2023.32.9 over-the-air, Tesla has stated that it will contact vehicle owners to schedule a service appointment. This would be done free of charge.
The majority of Tesla’s recalls are software updates to its fleet of vehicles. This makes them relatively easy to address, but it also results in vast numbers of vehicles being affected in each “recall.” In May alone, Tesla “recalled” over 1.1 million vehicles in China over a regenerative braking issue. That recall was also addressed through an OTA update.
Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 and Model Y, but the Model S and Model X remain imported to China from the Fremont Factory. The Shanghai factory is Tesla’s largest in the world, with an annual production capacity of over 950,000 vehicles, as per Tesla’s Q3 2023 Update Letter.
