On Monday, June 11, Ford filed to trademark the Ranger Lighting and Maverick Lightning name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The trademarks suggest the legacy automaker plans to add more battery electric pickup trucks to its lineup soon.
CarBuzz speculated that the Ranger Lightning might be a hybrid pickup truck. However, both the Maverick Lightning and Ranger Lightning trademarks are classified under Nice Class 12, which refers to motor vehicles, specifically pickup trucks, electric vehicles, sports utility vehicles, and their structural parts.
The Lightning vehicles’ classification heavily suggests that Ford plans to make the new Ranger and Maverick BEVs. Plus, the Maverick already has a hybrid variant on the market. And during the F-150 Lightning’s launch event in April, Ford CEO Jim Farley teased a second electric pickup truck which might be the Ranger Lightning.
“I wish we could bring you all down there, but we’re already pushing dirt down in Blue Oval City in Tennessee for another electric pickup truck that’s different from this one,” Farley teased.
Earlier this year, Ford’s electric vehicle unit, known as the Model e, revealed plans to expand its EV initiative in Europe. The legacy automaker aims to launch seven new electric vehicles—in addition to the E-Transit van and Mustang Mach-E—in Europe by 2024, with an annual production capacity of 600,000 EVs by 2023. Ford expects the annual sales of EVs in Europe to exceed 600K units by 2026.
Ford plans to introduce three new passenger vehicles and four new commercial cars in Europe by 2024. The Maverick Lightning and Ranger Lightning were not listed among the seven new EVs it announced. The BEVs Ford plans to launch in Europe are the Puma, a sport crossover, a medium-size crossover, the Transit Courier, and Transit Custom.
