Tesla and xAI head Elon Musk has said that the next version of the Grok language model is not far from hitting the public, and it’s expected to include “substantial improvements.”

In response to a post on X claiming that Grok outputs false information about as much as xAI competitor OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Musk said on Monday that the system’s next version should be out next month. He also said that the new version will bring improvements “across the board,” suggesting in the reply that it could result in fewer hallucinations than the current version.

Musk launched his artificial intelligence company xAI last July, and Grok has been the company’s first software release, officially debuting in November. Grok is available for subscribers of an X Premium Plus account, and Musk has also said that Tesla would eventually run a smaller, native version of the software in its vehicles.

On xAI’s website, the company notes that “Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so intended to answer almost anything and, far harder, even suggest what questions to ask!”

The software also comes with the option to use either a Fun Mode, which Musk has noted is more rebellious and humorous, or a Regular Mode.

Following Musk’s launch of xAI last summer, the company in December became incorporated in Nevada as a benefit corporation, meaning that it will focus on societal and environmental impact throughout its operations. On the company’s website, it says that xAI’s mission is to “advance our collective understanding of the universe.”

In the past, Musk has also been outspoken with warnings about AI posing a civizational risk, and he recently said he was “uncomfortable” developing AI and robotics at Tesla without having roughly a quarter of stakeholder voting control.
