Tesla China to produce seven-seat Model Y starting October: report

A recent report from China has suggested that Tesla would be producing a seven-seat variant of the Model Y crossover at its Giga Shanghai facility. The Giga Shanghai-made seven-seat Model Y will reportedly be sold in the Chinese and European markets starting October.

News of the supposed new Model Y variant from Giga Shanghai was initially posted by Chinese media outlet National Business Daily. The publication also claimed that the seven-seat Model Y from Giga Shanghai has already completed the required certifications for its upcoming release in Europe.

Reports from last year suggested that Tesla China was looking to release an updated variant of its best-selling all-electric crossover in the first half of 2024, with sales starting at the end of the year. At the time, reports also suggested that the seven-seat Model Y variant would weigh 45 kg (99 lbs) more than its five-seat variant, and its passenger weight limit would be increased by 70 kg (154 lbs).

It should be noted that while the claims outlined by National Business Daily seem plausible, another local news publication, Shanghai Securities News, has challenged some of the report’s claims. National Business Daily‘s report claimed that Giga Shanghai was already producing seven-seat Model Y variants, but Shanghai Securities News, citing a supposed Tesla insider, argued that this was not the case. The Tesla insider did not challenge the other claims outlined in National Business Daily’s report.

Tesla China already supplies the Model Y to multiple territories, but so far, Giga Shanghai has only been producing five-seat variants of the vehicle. The same is true for the Model Y units that are produced at Giga Berlin. As of this writing, only the Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD) from the United States can be ordered with a seven-seat configuration, which costs an additional $2,000.

It’s undeniable that the Model Y’s cabin space is optimized for a five-seat configuration, but it is also undeniable that a seven-seat option could be quite compelling for customers with larger families. Even if the third row seats of the Model Y are quite cramped for adults, after all, they are quite perfect for smaller children.
