Maserati the next vehicle company to aim for electrification

Maserati is aiming to incorporate some form of electric propulsion in all its new models from 2019 on.

Autocar reported that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed that the company is making moves toward the electric industry.

Maserati is joining the latest trend toward electrification, as massive companies like BMW group, Volkswagen and Volvo have all made similar pledges toward electric sustainability in the near future.

Marchionne said during a conference call with investors that all of Fiat Chrysler’s brands would begin making the switch toward electrification. For Maserati, he said that the company will switch a significant amount of its investment in powertrains to electric after “it completes the development of its next two models.”

The first new electrified model is scheduled for unveiling in 2020, and will most likely be based on the Alfieri concept model: a two seat sports car.

In the meantime, Maserati is aiming to produce hybrid version of many of its current models.

Maserati is considered by some as one of the ultimate luxury vehicle companies. Its commitment to electrification means that Maserati is aiming to catch up to Tesla in the luxury EV market.

That’s the main difference right now between Tesla and competitors — sure, the battery size is on par with market standards and the Supercharger network provides a slight edge, but what separates the Tesla Model 3 from the likes of the Chevy Bolt or the Volkswagen I.D. is that it’s a beautiful luxury vehicle.

Right now, Tesla has cornered the luxury EV market with the release of the Model 3. As investors and skeptics murmur about production goals, Tesla has the opportunity to drastically impact the EV luxury vehicle market if it can reach the lofty expectations CEO Elon Musk has set.

What’s not surprising, however, is that more and more major auto companies are looking to catch up with the likes of Tesla by switching to electrified propulsion.
