SpaceX bails out Boeing and employees are reportedly ‘humiliated’

SpaceX will rescue the NASA astronauts that are stuck aboard the International Space Station (ISS) bringing them back on the Crew-9 vehicle in February.

NASA’s decision to rely on SpaceX and not Boeing is reportedly bringing down morale at the company, and employees are reportedly “humiliated,” according to a report from the New York Post.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been stuck on the ISS for nearly three months since they arrived in early June.

However, NASA chose to not utilize the Boeing Starliner space capsule to bring the pair home. Instead, the agency will rely on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon. The decision has brought workers at Boeing to a crossroads, with some of them saying they are “humiliated,” “embarrassed,” and “horrified.”

One Boeing employee told the Post in a report that they have “had so many embarrassments lately, we’re under a microscope. This just made it, like, 100 times worse.”

Additionally, they said they “hate SpaceX” and “talk sh*t about them all the time.” Only to realize that now “they’re bailing us out.”

NASA announced its decision to utilize SpaceX instead of Boeing on its website in a post that confirmed they will come home early next year. They will spend six additional months in orbit.

“Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing’s Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: our core value and our North Star,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in the post. “I’m grateful to both the NASA and Boeing teams for all their incredible and detailed work.”

“Decisions like this are never easy, but I want to commend our NASA and Boeing teams for their thorough analysis, transparent discussions, and focus on safety during the Crew Flight Test,” Ken Bowersox, an Associate Administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate said. “We’ve learned a lot about the spacecraft during its journey to the station and its docked operations. We also will continue to gather more data about Starliner during the uncrewed return and improve the system for future flights to the space station.”

Boeing’s morale is “in the toilet” after NASA chose SpaceX.

Elon Musk also commented on the decision:
