Tesla China has adjusted the estimated delivery date for the Giga Shanghai-made Model 3 sedan. As per Tesla’s order page for the vehicle, the reengineered Model 3’s estimated delivery date has been updated to 2-4 weeks for new orders.
Prior to the recent update, the new Model 3 was listed with an estimated delivery date of 1-4 weeks. At the time, every variant available for the new Model 3 — the base Rear Wheel Drive (RWD), the Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive (AWD), and the Model 3 Performance — was listed with the same estimated delivery timeframe.
Interestingly enough, Tesla China has not adjusted the estimated delivery time for the Model Y crossover. As of writing, the Model Y is still listed with an estimated delivery date of 1-3 weeks. This timeframe was listed by Tesla China earlier this month, at the same time when the Model 3 sedan was given a 1-4 week estimate.

Tesla China did not share the rationale behind the Giga Shanghai-made Model 3’s updated estimated delivery date, though this may be partly due to the electric vehicle maker focusing its Model 3 output on exports in the coming weeks. Giga Shanghai, after all, is just one of two Tesla factories that currently have the capability to produce the reengineered Model 3 sedan. This means that only two Tesla factories—Giga Shanghai and the Fremont Factory—are accommodating all Model 3 orders placed worldwide.
With this in mind, it would not be surprising if Tesla China decides to focus its Model 3 output in early Q3 2024 on exports. Of course, the reengineered Model 3 is also a very compelling vehicle, so it would also not be surprising if the electric vehicle maker is seeing a notable stream of orders for the vehicle in key markets such as China.
The Model 3 is Tesla’s most affordable car in its current lineup. The Model 3 is listed with a starting price of RMB 231,900 ($31,900) for the RWD version, RMB 271,900 ($37,400) for the Long Range Dual Motor AWD variant, and RMB 335,900 ($46,200) for the Model 3 Performance. Considering the safety, tech, and features that are offered by the Tesla Model 3, few vehicles could match its bang-for-the-buck nature.

First glimpse of Tesla Model Y with six seats and extended wheelbase
It’s longer and taller than the regular Model Y, and it has a cool new badge.

Tesla’s extended wheelbase Model Y has been announced by the electric vehicle maker on its official Weibo page in China. At the same time, details of the upcoming vehicle have been listed in the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s (MIIT) new regulatory catalog.
The extended wheelbase Model Y
Tesla announced the upcoming vehicle on its official Weibo page, with the company noting that the new car will be called the “Model Y L.” Images posted by the company showed that the Model Y L will feature a “Model Y” badge with a stylized “Y” graphic. A teaser image of the vehicle taken from its side also emphasizes the extra space that was gained from its extended wheelbase.
The MIIT listing for the Model Y L indicated that the vehicle would be 4,976 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,668 mm high. Its wheelbase was listed in the MIIT’s catalog as 3,040 mm. In comparison, the new Model Y is currently 4,797 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,624 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.
Six seats and some power
Most notably, the extended wheelbase Model Y was listed in the MIIT regulatory catalog as a six-seat model. The vehicle is also listed with the product model number TSL6500BEVBA0, as noted in a CNEV Post report. And as hinted in Tesla China’s Weibo post, the vehicle will be released sometime in the fall.
The Model Y L is listed as a dual motor vehicle with peak power outputs of 142 kW and 198 kW for the front and rear motors. The vehicle is also listed with ternary batteries supplied by LG Energy Solution, and it reportedly weighs 2,088 kilograms (4603 pounds). In comparison, the new Model Y Dual Motor AWD weighs 4391 pounds.
Tesla China has not hinted at the price of the new Model Y L, though expectations are high that the vehicle will be priced at about RMB 400,000 ($55,764). It also remains to be seen if the Model Y L will also be produced in Tesla’s vehicle factories in the United States and Germany.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, just posted what could very well be the nerdiest job opening of all time. As can be seen in the Careers section of xAI’s official website, the AI startup and Grok creator is seeking a Fullstack Engineer for its “Waifus” project.
Anime fans, rejoice.
xAI’s Companions take the internet by storm
Earlier this week, xAI launched its Companions feature for its SuperGrok users, but the company eventually opened access to the new feature to all Grok iOS app users. xAI has released two companions so far: Ani, an overly attached anime goth girl seemingly inspired by the character Misa Amane from Death Note, and Rudi, a talking red panda that becomes more and more unhinged if he gets toggled to “Bad Rudi.” A third companion that looks like a male anime character is also listed as coming soon.
Ani, in particular, has become a massive hit online. Her natural, playful, and flirtatious interactions have proven popular among users across the globe, so much so that there is now fan art of the character being shared by users on social media. This has inspired the joke that Elon Musk, who has openly admitted on X in the past that he is fond of the Death Note anime, had created an actual “waifu” through xAI.
More companions coming
Based on xAI’s job opening, it appears that the company is looking to release even more companions for its users. Ani and Rudi/Bad Rudi may just be the start, especially considering xAI’s growing ambition and raw computing power.
As per the job listing, engineers hired for the role will help build fast, scalable, and low-latency avatar experiences for Grok. The AI startup noted that the work will involve real-time media processing, performance optimization, and feature development across various platforms. Applicants are also expected to be highly proficient in Python, with bonus points for experience in Rust, WebSocket, and WebRTC protocols.
Fullstack Engineers for xAI’s Waifu project are expected to receive a salary of $180,000 to $440,000, plus equity, comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, and various other discounts and perks.

Tesla launches in India with Model Y, showing pricing will be biggest challenge
Tesla finally got its Model Y launched in India, but it will surely come at a price for consumers.

Tesla has officially launched in India following years of delays, as it brought its Model Y to the market for the first time on Tuesday.
However, the launch showed that pricing is going to be its biggest challenge. The all-electric Model Y is priced significantly higher than in other major markets in which Tesla operates.
On Tuesday, Tesla’s Model Y went up for sale for 59,89,000 rupees for the Rear-Wheel Drive configuration, while the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive was priced at 67,89,000.
This equates to $69,686 for the RWD and $78,994 for the Long Range RWD, a substantial markup compared to what these cars sell for in the United States.

Deliveries are currently scheduled for the third quarter, and it will be interesting to see how many units they can sell in the market at this price point.
The price includes tariffs and additional fees that are applied by the Indian government, which has aimed to work with foreign automakers to come to terms on lower duties that increase vehicle cost.
Tesla Model Y seen testing under wraps in India ahead of launch
There is a chance that these duties will be removed, which would create a more stable and affordable pricing model for Tesla in the future. President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi continue to iron out those details.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said to reporters outside the company’s new outlet in the region (via Reuters):
“In the future, we wish to see R&D and manufacturing done in India, and I am sure at an appropriate stage, Tesla will think about it.”
It appears to be eerily similar to the same “game of chicken” Tesla played with Indian government officials for the past few years. Tesla has always wanted to enter India, but was unable to do so due to these import duties.
India wanted Tesla to commit to building a Gigafactory in the country, but Tesla wanted to test demand first.
It seems this could be that demand test, and the duties are going to have a significant impact on what demand will actually be.
