Volkswagen plans to delay the production of upcoming electric vehicle (EV) models.
The German automaker’s CEO (Chief Executive Officer), Oliver Blume, explained that delaying production on EV models would help VW allocate investments better. He added that Volkswagen would also be able to avoid software issues that have plagued EV production in the past.
According to Handelsblatt, internal memos revealed that Volkswagen would delay the production of its flagship EV, the Trinity compact SUV. Volkswagen’s Trinity SUV was supposed to launch in the market by 2026, but the German automaker has moved the start of production to 2032.
Volkswagen has been working on Trinity for a few years. In 2022, Volkswagen Group’s Supervisory Board greenlit the construction of the company’s new manufacturing facility in Wolfsburg-Warmenau, a ~$2 billion production plant for Trinity. At the time, Volkswagen Chairman Herbert Diess noted that Trinity would help the company compete against Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin in Grünheide.
Earlier this year, VW shared plans for a new lineup of battery electric vehicles under €25,000. Volkswagen aimed to make EVs “from Europe for Europe” in Spain and debut an EV under €20,000 by 2027.
