Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle (EV) sales in the United States increased by 60.8% in the first half (H1)of 2024 compared to the same period a year ago.
A recently released report by the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA) revealed that Hyundai Motor Group sold approximately 61,843 EVs in the United States across its Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis brands in H1 2024. In comparison, Hyundai Motor Group sold 38,457 EV units by H1 2023. If Hyundai’s plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell sales are included, KAMA data states that the legacy automaker sold 72,528 eco-friendly cars in the United States, up by 46.4% compared to H1 2023.
Hyundai Motor Group is estimated to have a combined market share (between all its brands) of 10.2% in the US EV market, up 2.8% in 2023. Last year, Hyundai and Kia’s combined EV sales made Hyundai Motor Group the second best-selling automaker in the US EV market.
Only Tesla is ahead of Hyundai in the US EV market by a large gap. However, the South Korean automaker has reportedly been closing the gap between itself and Tesla this year. The company’s Hyundai Motor and Genesis brands sold approximately 32,592 EVs in the United States in the first half of 2024, up by 32.5% year-over-year. Meanwhile, KAMA reported a 111% sales increase in Kia EVs, with 29,251 electric vehicles sold under the brand during H1 2024.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 account for a significant chunk of the legacy automaker’s EV sales in the United States. The IONIQ 5 was the fourth best-selling EV in the US, with 18,728 units sold. Meanwhile, the Kia EV6 was the 10th best-selling EV with 10,941 units sold in the US market. The Kia EV9 missed the top 10 best-selling EV list by a hair, coming in 11th place with 9,671 units sold in the US.
