Tesla Cybertruck lands in South Korea for certification

Tesla Cybertruck has reportedly made its way to South Korea for potential certification in the country. It would be the first market outside North America to have the all-electric pickup approved for sales and operation.

Cybertruck is currently limited to the United States and Mexico. Although select units have made their way to other countries and into the hands of some controversial figures, the vehicle is only approved for widespread sales in those two countries.

It is expected to make its way to Canada sometime next month.

However, South Korean officials have confirmed in a new report to local media that they are aiming to certify the Cybertruck for passenger sales soon.

A report from Bloter, a South Korean media outlet, states a Cybertruck is in the hands Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KATRI). An official confirmed this to the outlet:

“The Tesla Cybertruck came to the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute (KATRI) in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province for certification purposes.”

The official said Tesla sent the unit to them directly:

“KATRI receives various vehicles for certification, including vehicles imported directly by individuals or companies, but in the case of the Cybertruck, the seller (Tesla) is in the process of receiving certification directly.”

Although Tesla has not indicated directly that it plans to sell the Cybertruck in the market by any certain date, this is an indication that things could be moving in that direction soon.

There are rumors that Tesla was planning to offer an “international version” of Cybertruck, a smaller, more compact version that would be suitable for the tight roads and alleys that are more commonly found in European and Asian countries.

Musk stoked these ideas with a post on X last month when he confirmed there seemed to be plenty of demand for the truck in markets outside North America.
