Tesla Shanghai Megafactory to start construction next month: report

The Tesla Shanghai Megafactory is moving forward, though its construction date and Megapack mass production targets appear to have been moved slightly back. This was hinted at in a recent report from China.

Citing sources from Tesla China, Chinese publication The Paper recently claimed that the EV maker is looking to start the construction of the Shanghai Megafactory in May 2024. Mass production of the grid-scale Megapack battery units is reportedly expected to start in Q1 2025.

When Tesla China signed an agreement with Shanghai’s Lingang authorities last year, expectations were high that the Megafactory would start its construction sometime in the third quarter of 2023. Megapack production was initially expected to start sometime in Q2 2024. With this in mind, it would appear that the Shanghai Megafactory is running a couple of quarters behind its original targets.

The delays in the initial timeline for the Shanghai Megafactory are not that surprising, however. Back in December, Tesla China formally launched the Megafactory project in Shanghai. Considering that the signing ceremony for the project’s land acquisition was done in Q4 2023, it was evident that the facility would likely start its buildout sometime in 2024

Tesla China’s Megafactory would be the company’s first energy storage plant built outside the United States. The facility is expected to produce up to 10,000 Megapacks annually, which translates to about 40 GWh worth of energy storage. Megapacks produced at the Shanghai Megafactory are expected to be sold both in China and in foreign territories.

The Tesla Megafactory will be located in Shanghai’s Lingang area, which is also the home of Gigafactory Shanghai, as noted in a CNEV Post report. The facility is Tesla’s largest electric vehicle plant by raw volume. Giga Shanghai produces the company’s two mass-market vehicles, the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover, and also serves as Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub.
