Tesla will open orders for Model 3 dual-motor AWD, Performance next week

While responding to a tweet from a Tesla enthusiast on Friday, Elon Musk announced that the Performance and Dual-Motor AWD variants of the Model 3 could be ordered next week. Musk also provided an update on the production date of the compact electric car’s two new variants, stating that Tesla will start manufacturing the Dual-Motor AWD and Performance Model 3 by July.

Musk’s Model 3 update came as a response to a question from Ryan McCaffrey, a Tesla enthusiast and host of the Ride the Lightning podcast. In a tweet, McCaffrey asked for an update about the Model 3 upcoming options, as well as the vehicles’ pricing and specs. Musk responded to the podcast host’s inquiry, outlining some details on the rollout of the Model 3’s next two options, even noting that Air Suspension would probably be available next year.

Musk’s update about the Model 3’s Dual-Motor AWD and Performance variants comes at a time when Tesla seems to be dropping hints that the production of the compact electric car is starting to hit its stride. Earlier today, it was reported that Tesla registered more than 3,600 new Model 3 VINs, just a few days after the company registered more than 5,000 new identification numbers for the electric car. With this latest batch, Tesla has filed more than 42k Model 3 VINs to date.

The addition of the Dual-Motor AWD variant for the Model 3 has been teased by Elon Musk for a while now. Back in April, Musk provided a few updates on Twitter, stating that the AWD version would be offered as soon as Tesla hits a steady production pace of 5,000 Model 3 per week. Thus, the fact that Tesla will allow orders for the AWD Model 3 by the end of next week seems to highlight the company’s confidence that it could hit its goal of producing 5,000 Model 3 per week by the end of the second quarter.

While sightings of Dual-Motor AWD Model 3 have been reported in the past few months, the electric car’s Performance version has proven to be a lot more elusive. In Tesla’s recently uploaded quarterly all-hands promo video, however, a considerable amount of time was dedicated to a matte black Model 3 with large rims and predominantly red brake calipers. The vehicle’s segment in the video has triggered speculations among Tesla enthusiasts. In forums such as the r/TeslaMotors subreddit alone, several Tesla fans and owners were speculating that the matte black Model 3 in the promo video might be a Performance version of the electric car.
