BYD raised its annual sales target, reported Morgan Stanley in a note dated September 9. The company’s previous guidance for this year was set at 3.6 million units. BYD recently increased its 2024 annual sales target to 4 million units.
The Chinese automaker attributed its positive outlook to a surge in plug-in hybrid sales, but its electric vehicles (EV) sales aren’t too shabby either. BYD has sold about 2.3 million EVs and hybrids so far in 2024. It would need to sell 425,000 monthly units between September and December to reach its new 4 million guidance.
Morgan Stanley noted that BYD has a new car-carrying ship due to come online by the end of the year. The vessel might help BYD reach its new goal. The Chinese automaker predicts that its overseas sales will double to over 450,000 by year-end, making that 425,000 monthly sales target more likely. BYD forecasts that the overseas market will account for 50% of total sales in the future.
According to Reuters, BYD’s new 2024 guidance would almost be on par with Ford Motor, which ranked sixth in global sales in 2023 with 4.4 million vehicles sold. BYD’s revised 2024 annual sales target also puts it in the same league as other major legacy automakers in Japan.
BYD overtook Honda and Nissan Motor in car sales between April and June 2024. In the second quarter, the company’s vehicle sales grew by 40% to 980,000 units, becoming the 7th largest automaker worldwide.
