Tesla launches Model 3 in Mexico as global rollout steamrolls ahead

Tesla’s global rollout of the Model 3 is taking a step forward this Friday, with the company sending out open house invitations to reservation holders in Mexico. The Model 3 launch will be held at the Mexico City-Masaryk store on March 8, 2019, with the event running from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The subject on Tesla’s email can be translated to “Model 3, the wait is over,” while the invite itself encouraged reservation holders to “become part of history.” The Mexico City-Masaryk Tesla store is located on the upscale neighborhood of Polanco near Bosque de Chapultepec (a popular spot similar to the Central Park in New York),  known locally as a place populated by high-end stores from upscale brands.

Tesla Model 3 reservation holder Jose indicated in a message to Teslarati that the company started calling Model 3 reservation holders including himself last month, asking about which version of the vehicle they will most likely choose. Tesla officially opened its Model 3 online configurator in Mexico on Thursday as the company began to send invitations to Model 3 reservation holders to attend Friday’s launch event.

Tesla’s launch of the Model 3 in Mexico reinforces the company’s commitment to bringing its first affordable mass-market electric vehicle to the global market. Tesla’s international push for the Model 3 has been primarily focused in Europe and China in this quarter, and it is encouraging to see the company continue to make a strong push to enter into new countries.

An expedited global rollout for the Model 3 will likely be in Tesla’s best interest to minimize any cannibalization of sales, especially as the company prepares to reveal its affordable mass-market compact SUV that’s derived from the Model 3. Tesla is set to unveil the Model Y next week at an event at the Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, CA.
