It appears that consumers in China’s domestic auto market are starting to favor the reengineered Tesla Model 3. This was hinted at in the estimated sales of the vehicle so far this Q3 2024, as well as the increasing wait times for the all-electric sedan on Tesla China’s official website.
Tesla China is seeing some momentum this third quarter, with the electric vehicle maker seeing 16,200 new vehicle registrations in the week ending September 8, 2024. From this number, estimates suggest that the reengineered Tesla Model 3 accounted for about 6,400 units. These represent the highest weekly registrations for the all-electric sedan this Q3 2024 so far.

The estimated delivery dates of the reengineered Tesla Model 3 have also been adjusted in China. As can be seen on the vehicle’s order page on Tesla China’s official website, the estimated wait time for new Model 3 orders has been adjusted to 4-6 weeks. This is true for the base Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD), Model 3 Long Range All Wheel Drive (AWD), and the top-tier Model 3 Performance.
Prior to the update, the estimated delivery date for new Model 3 orders was listed at 3-5 weeks for all three variants of the all-electric sedan. This adjusted wait time for the vehicle was posted in mid-July 2024. During the start of the third quarter, estimated delivery dates of the reengineered Tesla Model 3 were as low as 1-4 weeks.

While Giga Shanghai is supplying the reengineered Model 3 sedan to multiple markets across the globe, the vehicle still seems very competitive in the domestic Chinese automotive market. This is quite impressive as the Tesla Model 3 has a lot of legitimate rivals in China’s electric vehicle sector.
These include the Xiaomi SU7, an affordable, stylish, Porsche Taycan-inspired all-electric sedan with all the bells and whistles consumers could ask for. During the SU7’s launch, the Xiaomi CEO specifically noted that the vehicle’s target buyers are Tesla Model 3 drivers who wish to upgrade their cars. During the week that ended September 8, Xiaomi saw 3,200 registrations for the SU7.
