Tesla battery supplier seeks to eliminate reliance on Chinese resources: report

Tesla’s long-time battery supplier, Panasonic Energy, seeks to reduce its reliance on Chinese resources, specifically for electric vehicles produced in the United States.

Panasonic Energy of North America’s President Allan Swan said that eliminating its reliance on supply chains in China is the company’s “No.1 objective.”

Reuters tied Swan’s comment to President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to increase tariffs on goods imported from China.

“We do have some Chinese supply, but we don’t have a lot. And we have plans not to have some, as we go forward, and that has accelerated,” said Swan.

According to Swan, most of Panasonic Energy of North America’s raw materials come from overseas suppliers, like Canada.

Despite President Trump’s win, Panasonic Energy and other EV suppliers would have to reorganize their supply chains and reduce or eliminate their reliance on China. The Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act has strict rules on the country of origin of raw materials used in EV production.
