Tesla’s Elon Musk reveals Beijing does not want Starlink in China

During a recent interview, Elon Musk shared a number of interesting details about his thoughts on China. But apart from sharing about what he believes could be a peace plan between Taiwan and China, Musk also mentioned something interesting about Beijing’s stance on SpaceX’s satellite internet system, Starlink.

As it turns out, Beijing does not want Starlink. At all. And China has made its point very clear.

Musk mentioned this during an interview with the Financial Times. “Musk says Beijing has made clear its disapproval of his recent rollout of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite communications system, in Ukraine to help the military circumvent Russia’s cut-off of the internet. He says Beijing sought assurances that he would not sell Starlink in China,” the publication noted.

Interestingly enough, the FT did not mention if Musk relented to Beijing’s sentiments. Musk has not issued a comment about Starlink in China either, according to a report from CNBC

While the reasons behind Beijing’s stance on Starlink are up for question, China has shown a tendency to build up its own technology. In the telecom market, domestic giants like China Mobile and Huawei have helped China become one of the countries with the highest penetrations of 5G. China has also rolled out its own satellite system called BeiDou, which provides navigation services like GPS.

While speaking about China and Taiwan, Elon Musk admitted that Tesla’s operations would be adversely affected by any conflict in the region. If this does happen, the Tesla CEO noted that Gigafactory Shanghai would likely be able to continue supplying battery electric vehicles to the local Chinese market, but not anywhere else. This would be a notable blow for Tesla since Giga Shanghai is the company’s primary vehicle export hub.
