The Tesla Model Y has officially replaced the South Pasadena Police Department’s (SPPD) entire gas-powered fleet.

The South Pasadena PD started replacing its vehicles with Tesla Model Y and Model 3 units in May 2023. The police department’s Tesla fleet started with 20 vehicles: 10 Model Y units and 10 Model 3 units. The Model Y vehicles are used for patrol operations, while the Model 3s are used for Detective/administrative work. The SPPD partnered with UP, FIT, and Unplugged Performance Company to prepare its Model Y units for work.

SPPD’s Tesla journey started in September 2022, when it received approval from the South Pasadena City Council to transition its entire gas-powered vehicle fleet to Tesla BEVs. Prior to the approval, the police department researched Teslas, including tracking the progress of other Tesla units used by other law enforcement agencies in the United States.

When it comes to why the South Pasadena Police Department chose to use Tesla Model Y units for patrol activity, it had a simple answer.

“Simply put, the Tesla Model Y we identified as meeting and/or exceeding our operational needs for patrol vehicles is safer, outperforms, and costs significant(ly) less to power/fuel & maintain than the gas-powered vehicles we use now. When you add the climate and health benefits of eliminating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on top of the economic and performance benefits, the decision to transition became a no-brainer.”

In 2022, the City Council also approved two charging infrastructure projects to support the SPPD’s transition to BEVs. As of this writing, 34 Level 2 chargers are installed at the South Pasadena Police Department and public employee parking lots. Over 50% of the Level 2 chargers are available for public use. In the future, an additional Level 3 DC, dual-port, fast charger will be installed at the SPPD parking lot.
