Starlink outpaces local competitors in Mexico

SpaceX’s Starlink internet service has gathered over 150,000 customers in Mexico since it entered the market, outpacing local competitors. 

According to the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), Starlink’s market share is currently 0.32% in Mexico, which may be a sliver in other markets. However, Starlink is outpacing other local internet providers in Mexico, including HughesNet, GlobalSat, and StarGroup. 

Starlink’s growing customer base in Mexico becomes even more interesting when considering the price of its subscriptions. According to Cable.co.uk, the average cost of an internet connection in Mexico through broadband platforms is 533 pesos per month.

For Starlink connection, customers in Mexico will have to pay for the equipment, which starts at 5,900 pesos. The monthly subscription started at 1,045 pesos, nearly double the price of regular internet connection. 

The secret to Starlink’s success in Mexico is two government contracts it won from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) last year, reported Wired.

The first contract, valued between $41.3 million and $82.5 million, enables Starlink to provide free internet in remote and inaccessible areas around Mexico. Meanwhile, the second contract, valued between $47.1 million and $94.3 million, allows Starlink to expand cellular services in disconnected communities throughout Mexico.
