The Tesla Semi has already started deliveries to customers like PepsiCo, but few details about the Class 8 all-electric truck have been made public. Thanks to the upcoming “Run on Less” trucking event later this year, however, some details on the real-world performance and capabilities of the Tesla Semi are poised to be shared.

PepsiCo will be entering at least one of its Tesla Semi units at the upcoming industry event. Amanda DeVoe, Sustainability and Technology Director of Fleet at PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division, noted that PepsiCo would be putting the Tesla Semi through a stress test at “Run on Less.”

“We’re really excited to participate in the run and allow the industry to have access to the insights and the learnings that we are getting from experiencing these vehicles. We’re gonna run ’em hard,” DeVoe said.

At the Run On Less event, the Tesla Semi would operate at its maximum payload capacity and travel up to 500 miles round trip. Independent performance data from the truck will be posted on the “Run on Less” website, which should provide valuable insights into the Tesla Semi’s real-world efficiency and performance.

“We really want to demonstrate the capability of our team, the capability of the Semi, and the capability of the Class 8 electric vehicle to compete with the (internal combustion) counterpart,” she said.

Mike Roeth, Executive Director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), emphasized the significance of Tesla’s participation in a statement to Automotive News. He stated that the Tesla Semi would garner significant attention from trucking companies and fleet managers during the event. “Getting Tesla into this is a big deal,” Roeth said.

During the vehicle’s first delivery event last December, Tesla released a video showing the Tesla Semi in an eight-hour run between the company’s Fremont factory and a PepsiCo bottling plant in San Diego. The Semi reportedly carried just under 82,000 pounds during the 500-mile test run, starting with 97% battery capacity and finishing with 4%. Other details about the feat, however, were not shared by the EV maker.

If Tesla’s demonstration can be replicated at the “Run on Less” event, it would be a new milestone for the electric vehicle maker. Tesla, after all, has suggested that the Semi uses just about 2 kWh of energy per mile.

Operators of Freightliner, Volvo, Nikola, and other trucking brands have entered their electric trucks into the event in the past. The trucks’ performances will be monitored in real-world conditions across seven depots in California and one in New York. The freight efficiency council has stated that the Tesla Semi will operate out of Sacramento, California.
