Canada’s steel and aluminum industry has voiced its support for tariffs on products from China, from electric vehicles and beyond.

As the weeks go by, more groups and businesses are supporting tariffs on electric vehicles and other products from China. Meanwhile, China warns Canada against imposing tariffs that could impact trade relations.

The Canadian government recently wrapped up a 30-day consultation period requesting advice and information about potentially restricting Chinese EV imports by imposing tariffs that align with policies implemented in the United States.

Canada’s largest labor union has demanded tariffs on electric vehicle imports and components in China. General Motors Canada has also encouraged the government to examine issues that could affect strong competition and prevent a fair playing field in the Canadian auto market.

During the Canadian government’s consultations, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland talked with groups and businesses that would be impacted by potential tariffs on EV imports from China. Among the groups Freeland talked to were steel and aluminum makers, who supported tariffs beyond EVs.
