As of Monday, July 22, 2024, Hyundai Motor’s stocks in South Korea have dropped 14.85%. Korea Exchange data reveals that Hyundai Motor’s stock price fell from a high of $215.80 per share on June 28 to $183.73 on July 22.
South Korean investors’ sentiments have also reached Kia. On June 19, 2024, Kia’s stock price shot up to $97.27 per share. As of July 22, 2204, it had dropped to $83.51.
The recent decline in Hyundai Motor and Kia’s shares has been linked to Trump’s rising chances of reelection. The Hyundai and Kia brands have made strides in the United States electric vehicle market. Last year, the two brands combined sold the most eco-friendly vehicles in the United States after Tesla.
However, some investors and analysts believe a Trump presidency might hamper Hyundai and Kia’s EV sales growth in the US. Recently, Trump announced that he would end President Joe Biden’s EV mandate on his first day in office. Trump’s announcement forecasts the future of EV automakers in the country.
Hyundai Motor Company has invested millions in local electric vehicle production in the United States. Only time will tell if those investments will pay off under a Trump presidency. Despite some potential hurdles, analysts maintain a positive outlook for Hyundai’s sales in the United States.
The South Korean automaker has already started making some adjustments in the United States. For instance, Hyundai announced it would produce hybrid vehicles in the new Georgia factory, which was supposed to be dedicated to EV production. In addition, Hyundai has taken steps to grow in other markets. For example, it filed for an initial public offering in India.
“The upcoming U.S. presidential election still comes as a major uncertainty, but the carmakers will be able to achieve solid earnings in the latter half by widening global sales for profitable vehicles and responding swiftly to any changes in the market for eco-friendly vehicles,” Hanwha Investment & Securities analyst Kim Sung-rae told the Korea Times.
