Rivian receives award from PETA for making its vehicles 100% cruelty-free

Rivian has won an award from one of the strictest vegan organizations in the world. In a recent press release, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) announced that it was giving a “REVolutionary Vegan Vehicle” Award to Rivian for the automaker’s efforts to ensure that no animals are harmed in the production of its all-electric vehicles.

Rivian’s award is quite impressive as PETA is typically very strict. Tesla previously saw quite a lot of pressure from PETA to ditch the use of leather in its vehicles, though the group eventually praised the EV maker for its cruelty-free interiors. Rivian’s recent award from the group then highlights the attention to detail that RJ Scaringe and his team have adopted when designing vehicles like the R1T and R1S.

PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman shared a comment about Rivian’s award in a press release. “Every vegan vehicle rolled out by Rivian helps spare vulnerable cows and sheep being mutilated and killed for leather and wool car interiors. PETA is celebrating this company for helping to steer the industry toward an animal- and planet-friendly future,” Remain noted.

As a light thanks for Rivian’s efforts to design its vehicles with cruelty-free materials, PETA noted that is sending a box of “delicious cow-shaped vegan chocolates” to the electric truck maker. The organization also highlighted that more and more carmakers are supporting leather-free interiors.

“Some of the world’s biggest car brands—such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen—offer leather-free car interiors in certain models, while Tesla is fully leather-free. Volvo announced that its cars will be completely leather-free by 2030. PETA is calling on lagging brands—including Audi, Bentley, Lexus, Mazda, and Porsche—to follow suit,” the group noted in a press release.

Rivian’s vehicles have always been promoted as adventure machines that take care of the environment. This is true for the company’s two existing consumer vehicles, the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, as well as its upcoming cars, the R2 crossover SUV, the R3 and R3X. Rivian seems to be gaining quite a bit of momentum as well, with CEO RJ Scaringe stating that the company received 68,000 R2 reservations in less than 24 hours following the vehicle’s unveiling event.
