Tesla China recalls 870 Model X vehicles over roof trim issue

Tesla China has initiated a recall for 870 imported Model X units over an issue with the vehicles’ roof trim panels. The recall was posted on China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) website.

The recall affects Tesla Model X units that were produced between March 16, 2016, and July 31, 2016. It should be noted that this recall is identical to the recall that was recently announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which affected 9,136 units of the 2016 Model X in the United States.

As per the SAMR in its announcement, the recently announced recall is a follow-up to a recall action that was implemented back in November 2020. At the time, Tesla recalled the Model X because some of the vehicle’s roof trim panels may have insufficient primer. As a result, the adhesion of the roof trims may weaken over time and the panels may detach from the vehicle.

As noted by the SAMR, some of the vehicles that were covered by the November 2020 recall may have still received roof panels that do not have the right amount of primer. Thus, with this new recall, Tesla China would be reinspecting the recalled vehicles. A tension test on the affected Model X’s roof panels would also be redone to check the adhesion of the components. If vehicles fail the adhesion test, new roof panels for affected Model X units will be provided and installed free of charge.

Tesla started selling vehicles in China in April 2014 with the Model S sedan. The Model X followed in 2016. While both vehicles were imported from the United States, Tesla became successful enough in China that the electric vehicle maker built Giga Shanghai to produce mass-market vehicles from the country. Giga Shanghai, which produces Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers, has since become Tesla’s largest factory by volume and primary vehicle export hub.
