Tesla Model X sighted being benchmarked by Ford

The Tesla Model X was recently spotted being benchmarked by Ford. The tests suggest that the veteran automaker might be looking into releasing a comparably sized electric vehicle as Tesla’s flagship SUV.

This is not the first time that Ford has been sighted benchmarking a Tesla. Other vehicles like the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover have been spotted being benchmarked by the auto veteran as well. Ford was even spotted benchmarking a Tesla Model S Plaid at one of its facilities in the past.

Considering Tesla’s current lineup — at least before the Cybertruck starts deliveries — the Model X is pretty much the only vehicle that has not been spotted being benchmarked by Ford yet. That is, at least, until now, as motoring publication Ford Authority recently shared images of the Model X being benchmarked by the Blue Oval as well.

Interestingly enough, Ford appeared to be benchmarking the Model X’s Long Range Dual Motor variant, not the top-tier Plaid trim. This was hinted at by the absence of a Plaid badge on the all-electric SUV’s rear decklid. The Model X in the sighting also seems to be configured in a rather simple manner, with Solid Black paint, 20-inch Cyberstream Wheels, and what appears to be a round steering wheel

While the Model X Long Range Dual Motor is no Plaid when it comes to performance, it is not a slouch by any means. The all-electric SUV has a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, and it features a top speed of 149 mph. It also has a range of 348 miles per charge, which is pretty impressive for a vehicle of its size.

The fact that Ford is benchmarking the Model X is quite interesting considering that the Blue Oval does not currently have a direct competitor for the flagship all-electric SUV. Ford’s all-electric crossover, the Mustang Mach-E, is more of a Tesla Model Y competitor. With this in mind, the veteran automaker’s Model X benchmarks may suggest that a larger all-electric SUV is in the works, or perhaps Ford is simply looking into the flagship Tesla’s tech and powertrain.
