Travel from NY to SF at 4000mph through the Hyperloop

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder behind Paypal, Tesla Motors and Space X, has always hinted about a 5th mode of transportation named the “Hyperloop”  which according to his words is a cross between a “Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table” which has the capacity to transport passengers at supersonic travel via magnetic levitation.  Piecing together the bits and pieces of his comments from over the past year, one can only speculate on what the Hyperloop would be capable of. Los Angeles to San Francisco in under 30 minutes?  We like the sounds of that!

The idea sounds grandiose, but a company by the name of ET3, short for Evacuated Tube Transport Technologies, is already well on it’s way to making this science fiction idea (think Total Recall) into a reality.  Mockups and prototypes suggest that a 3-mile section of the Hyperloop-like system is slated for testing by the end of the year. If successful, it could pave the way for efficient and quick transportation across the US and even other continents. ET3 estimates that the system might cost a tenth the price of a dedicated high-speed rail line and a quarter the cost of a dedicated highway.
