Rolls Royce unveiled its first-ever electric vehicle, the Rolls Royce Spectre.

Since the dawn of modern electric vehicles, the electric drivetrain has been perfect for luxury vehicles. An electric motor’s quiet, smooth, and reliable operation make it ideal for a luxury use case. And now, the leader in luxury motor cars has finally taken notice and has created its first electric vehicle, the Rolls Royce Spectre.

The first and perhaps most important thing to recognize about the new Rolls is that its specifications have never been its focus. Rolls Royce has prided itself on offering customers “adequate power,” an amazingly smooth ride, and an unparalleled interior experience. Still, these goals are often best portrayed qualitatively instead of with data and numbers. These goals continue to shine through with the newest member of the lineup.

The Rolls Royce Spectre follows in a long line of Rolls Royce coupes, most recently being the Rolls Royce Phantom and Dawn coupes/convertibles. And in turn, the Spectre has mimicked the performance admirably; 577 horsepower and 664 point feet of torque, perfectly adequate. It will deploy these hundreds of prancing ponies for roughly 260 miles of range. But again, I remind you, not the point of the vehicle.

The real focus should be on Rolls Royce’s Planar Suspension technology that they have employed for years, a technology that comes standard for the low, low price of “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” ($413,500). The suspension system uses sensors and some old-fashioned black magic to sense road imperfections, turns, and gradients to keep the vehicle perfectly flat and composed, even at a full clip.

Unlike Tesla, which uses an air-ride system to attempt this effect in the Model S and X, the Rolls Royce has a complex system of decoupling anti-roll bars and electromagnetic dampers that maintain the flat ride at all times. This results in what the company has often referred to as “a magic carpet ride.”

Rolls Royce continues their tradition of excellence in interiors with the Spectre. Only the highest-grade materials cover the entire cabin; even the headliner sparkles with the brand’s trademark “Starlight headliner. This new electric vehicle from the British luxury brand indicates a positive direction for the company; however, it will likely need to work harder than ever to differentiate itself in the increasingly cramped field of luxury electric cars. Rolls Royce has chosen their path, offering ultimate luxury.
