On Monday, September 30, 2024, Stellantis recalled 194,000 plug-in hybrid electric Jeep SUVs due to potential fire risks. Stellantis learned of the fire risks to its plug-in hybrid Jeeps after 13 fires were reported, and a routine company review of customer data led to an internal investigation.
The recall involves 154,000 units in the United States, 14,000 in Canada, 700 in Mexico, and about 26,000 vehicles outside North America. The recall affects 2020 through 2024 model year plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler units and 2022 through 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid cars. Stellantis stated that the potential fire risks are related to a battery component.
The fire incidents linked to the battery component started while the vehicles were parked and turned off. Stellantis calculated that 5% of cars may have the defect. The company believes the fire risk will be reduced if the vehicle’s battery level is depleted.
The legacy automaker advised owners to refrain from recharging their vehicles. It also warns customers to park the plug-in hybrids away from structures or other vehicles.
