Chinese automaker BYD set another record in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in July 2024. BYD’s global NEV sales will likely increase even further as it sets eyes on Canada.
BYD sold approximately 342,383 NEVs in July, up 30% year over year. The Chinese automaker beat its June 2024 NEV sales when it sold 341,658.
The Chinese automaker’s NEV sales include battery electric and hybrid vehicles. BYD’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales fell by 10% compared to June. It sold 130,000 BEVs in July. On the other hand, BYD’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales increased by 67% year-over-year and 8% compared to June 2024.
BYD’s NEV sales record in July shows the slowing demand for electric vehicles as other automakers have reported. It also shows the rising interest in hybrid cars. Many automakers are turning to hybrid vehicles to boost sales while they work on more affordable BEVs.
European and American legacy automakers struggle to compete with next-generation car manufacturers like Tesla. However, even Tesla acknowledged the need for more affordable EVs.
Meanwhile, Chinese automakers, like BYD, are already launching affordable electric vehicles in the global EV market—years ahead of the competition. The United States and the European Commission have imposed tariffs to combat the affordable prices of China-made EV imports. Canada is considering tariffs on EV imports from China as well.
Public documents filed in Ottawa revealed that BYD plans to enter Canada’s auto market. Lobbyists sought advice on BYD’s behalf about tariffs on EVs and more.
The lobbyists’ request suggests that BYD is prepared to accept tariffs Canada may impose on China-made EV imports. Canada’s largest union has called for tariffs matching the 100% rate the United States implemented on EV imports from China. According to Wards 100, even a 100% tariff would probably not affect China’s EV imports much.
For instance the BYD Seagull starts at $10,000 in China and the Chinese automaker is reportedly going to sell it in Canada. Even if the Seagull’s price id doubled, it would be price-competitive in Canada and the United States.
