Uber is expanding its “Comfort Electric” initiative to several new cities, the company said today. With the touch of a smartphone screen, Uber users will be able to choose an all-electric vehicle from the ride-hailing service in more U.S. cities over the coming months.
Uber’s Comfort Electric option debuted in May in California, reaching Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, giving ride-hailers the option to choose a sustainable, all-electric car instead of a gas-powered one.
With a successful program launch, which Uber has set aside $800 million on incentive programs to help drivers and riders switch to EVs, Comfort Electric is set to expand into seven additional cities, starting today.
The new cities include Austin, Baltimore, Denver, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland, and Seattle, Axios said, which was the first to report the news.
Riders will not be limited to their options, either. They can choose from Teslas, Polestars, or Ford’s Mustang Mach-E as their ride to their destination, Uber said.

Uber announced a deal late last year with Hertz, the rental car agency, that ensured 50,000 Teslas would be available for rent by 2023. The Hertz deal has made way for more electric car makers to offer their models to the rental company. The agreement between Hertz and Uber has taken things one step further. Uber said that 15,000 drivers have rented a Tesla through Hertz, making way for five million fully-electric road trips.
Axios also reported that it has hit an unexpected bottleneck with Tesla’s door handles. Some Uber riders have not been able to figure out how to operate the door handles, which has given riders some frustration prior to entering their vehicle. The report states that Uber has offered instructions on how to open Tesla’s door handles:
“To open the door, push wide part of handle with thumb. Then grab and pull handle to open.”
The Tesla door handles recently halted a road rage incident as the aggressor in that particular situation was immediately stopped by the design.
